Joanne joined chambers as a Tenant following the successful completion of her pupillage with 3DJB and is available to take instructions in all areas of family law ranging from international family law disputes to multi day fact finding hearings. In addition, Joanne also accepts instructions in TLATA disputes.
Throughout the time Joanne has been with 3DJB she has received regular commendation from members of the Judiciary for her preparation and meticulous attention to detail and from those instructing her for her client-focussed approach to each case.
At 3DJB, Joanne has represented some of the most vulnerable clients and has assisted them to secure protective orders for themselves and their children. Equally, Joanne recognises the importance of everyone being treated fairly in the court system and welcomes instructions from parents who find themselves overlooked within proceedings (often the non-resident parent). Joanne has successfully challenged false allegations of abuse, had contact arrangements reinstated and has pursued findings akin to parental alienation, all of which have resulted in the correct decisions being made for Joanne’s client and their children.
Before coming to the Bar, Joanne spent 3 years as a Tier 1 Legal Adviser to Family Law Magistrates across London. Within this role Joanne:
- advised the family court on a broad range of family law matters
- regularly assisted and facilitated parties and representatives in reaching agreement sometimes on sensitive and sometimes legally complex matters
- put questions to witnesses in domestic abuse cases on behalf of the court where parties were prohibited from cross-examining each other
- reformulated questions from self-represented parties to ensure they were relevant and appropriate
- developed ability to prepare last minute cases and quickly identifying the relevant reading, key issues and advice that the court needed to be given
- presided over FHDRA hearings in the Legal Adviser only court.
Owing to Joanne’s experience as a Civil Servant to the court, she has incredible insight into how client’s cases are dealt with internally and what powers and procedures are available to the court. As such, she is able to anticipate and swiftly address procedural and judicial oversights to avoid unnecessary delay, adjournments, stress and cost for her client’s.
As a Legal Adviser, Joanne was instrumental in delivering training where she:
- Created and delivered bitesize training sessions to Magistrates and colleagues on Non-Molestation and Occupation Orders
- Delivered Judicial College training to Magistrates remotely and in person across London
- Tailored training to suit all levels of the Magistracy
- Led training on private law applications (Section 8, SGOs and Parental Orders), public law applications (Care, Supervision and EPOs) and more general matters such as McKenzie Friends, domestic abuse and case preparation.
Joanne was also trained as a specialist in the Reciprocal Enforcement of Maintenance Orders and had the benefit of receiving continuous training from the Judicial College in all areas of family law.
Joanne also has experience working in family law solicitors for both a sole practitioner and a nationwide firm which will help her to anticipate the needs of her clients and those instructing her.
